29.08.2024: UK Music Chief Executive Tom Kiehl has spoken about the impact music tourism can have on local economies as Oasis announce their return with a series of stadium shows.
The band, which disbanded 15 years ago announced on Tuesday 27 August that they would be reforming for shows in Cardiff, London, Edinburgh, Dublin and Manchester.
Research undertaken by UK Music revealed that 19.2 million music tourists attended live shows in the UK in 2023, an increase of 33% on 2022 when the figure was 14.4 million, which helped to generate £8 billion in spending.
Tom Kiehl said:
“When rumours were mentioned a few years ago, it looked very unlikely that this would ever come to pass. So it could be a really once in a generation moment.
“Having a big music event in your community has a knock on and spill over impact on the wider economy too, so great news for the UK.”
Last year UK Music published its Here, There and Everywhere report, which included a guide for local councils on how they could turn their areas into music powerhouses.
