27.04.2026: On 7 May, local elections across England, Wales and Scotland present a crucial opportunity for councils to look at the role music plays in strengthening regional economies and building resilient communities.  

UK Music is urging newly elected leaders to back music in their local areas and sign up to the Local Music Action Charter. 

Since the launch of the Hometown Glory report in July 2025, 16 local councils are in the process of signing up to the Local Music Action Charter, including Hull City Council and Greater Manchester Combined Authority.  

The charter encourages councils to take simple first steps, such as transforming empty or underused buildings into vibrant music and cultural venues or supporting our campaigns on issues such as Agent of Change. 

With new leadership likely at several councils – investing in local music ecosystems presents a clear opportunity: stimulating the economy by boosting footfall, powering the hospitality and retail sectors, and creating vibrant places that attract residents, visitors, and investment. Whilst, at the same time, providing vital opportunities for those looking to enter the industry to develop their skillset. 

The impact is already clear. Grassroots music scenes contribute significantly to national economic output, helping the UK music sector generate £8 billion in Gross Value Added (GVA) and employ 220,000 people – more than the pharmaceutical, steel, and aerospace sectors combined. 

Now is the moment for councils, Mayors and MPs to turn public support into lasting change and ensure that music continues to thrive in every region, town, city and neighbourhood.
