05.09.24: UK Music supported an excellent music industry careers event from BIY People & Talent, which saw many young people attend panels and speak to industry professionals.

Held on Wednesday September 4, the event entitled ‘Prove Your Passion 2024’ saw attendees queueing around the block at London’s Omeara before the doors opened in much anticipation.

Developed by Silv Gargiulo of BIY People & Talent, with support from UK Music, and others in the music industry, the day was aimed at those interested in careers in the business side of the industry.

The event included all-day networking, three industry panels, and CV one-to-ones.

UK Music Director of Education & Skills Dr Oliver Morris said:

“The day was absolutely fantastic. As soon as we started discussing the possibilities with Silv at BIY we knew we wanted to support.

“Having a networking space open all day and lots of industry professionals in attendance was so useful for all the attendees.

“The networking along with the panels and CV one-to-ones offered a real turbo-boost for those interested in careers in the music industry!

“Massive thanks to Silv and team for pulling it together! We look forward to the next one!”

The event was held at one of London’s favourite music venues Omerea.

Founder & Director BIY People & Talent Silv Gargiulo said:

“There are so many entry and junior level candidates who approach me across multiple platforms whether that be Instagram, LinkedIn, email, WhatsApp etc on a daily basis, and as much as I would love to, I just physically don’t have time in the day to reply to everyone.

“I’ve created online content like hints and tips videos and the BIYPOD (my music business careers podcast), which are all super helpful, but none of these things are a substitute for face-to-face contact to help people realise that, wherever you’re from, you belong in this industry.

“I’m from a working class family and I just didn’t know music business careers even existed when I was younger, and by the time I did, I didn’t think they were for people like me.

“So, I wanted to bring together my nearly 20 years experience working in music to create this event to be more than “just a careers fair”. I wanted to create a supportive community experience, breaking down those barriers to entry and ensuring people coming in got that real life contact and connection, so they understand careers in the music business are open to them and within their grasp. It might not be easy, but it is possible, and you can do it.

“I think we created that yesterday with the help of our fabulous sponsors, including UK Music, the brilliant companies and organisations who attended, the wonderful team of folks who donned BIY t-shirts and worked their socks off (shout out to Oli and Courtney from UK Music!), and last but by no means least, the utterly fantastic, proactive and engaged candidates who came along and got stuck in.

“I’m super proud and grateful that we were able to put on this event and hope we can do it all over again in the future.”
