01.08:2024: UK Music Chief Executive Tom Kiehl has outlined the music industry’s priorities to new Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy. 

In one of her first major events since becoming a Cabinet Minister, Tom spoke to Lisa after she delivered her first keynote speech in Manchester on Wednesday (July 31). 

Tom Kiehl said: 

“It was great to visit Manchester to meet and listen to Lisa Nandy deliver her first keynote speech as Culture Secretary.

“I was fortunate to speak to Lisa following her speech and she expressed her strong desire to work with UK Music, its members and the sector.

“It is clear that overcoming barriers to opportunity through the creative industries is a top priority for Lisa and I am confident the music industry can play a pivotal role in realising her ambitions.

“Building on the positive discussions with the new government at a roundtable last week, it was also pleasing to discuss with the new Culture Secretary UK Music’s wider work on the Power of Music to improve health and wellbeing outcomes, alongside other key issues for the sector such as artificial intelligence, EU touring and music education.”

In her speech at Manchester’s Science and Industry Museum, Lisa Nandy invited industry leaders to work with the Department for Culture Media and Sport to deliver the Government’s national mission of economic growth over the next five years. Tom’s discussions with the Culture Secretary was UK Music’s latest engagement with senior Government ministers, and followed Tom’s talks with Culture Minister Chris Bryant at a round-table event last week.
