14.12.2015: On Thursday 10th December UK Music hosted a ‘Skills and Schools’ event at Dagenham Park School in Essex to inform pupils about the many possible career paths available in the music industry.

Music is dedicated to providing workshops in schools across the UK, with the aim of ensuring that more pupils are equipped with the necessary information to take their first steps into the sector.

Pianist and singer songwriter Ciara Hiadar, who graduated from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and is currently signed to Ninja Tune Records, led a song writing workshop alongside Phoebe Katis, who wrote the theme song for Bafta nominated film ‘Kajaki’. The event offered pupils first hand song writing experience and UK Music provided insight into the industry as a whole.

Following successful events in Didcot, Glossop and Liverpool, UK Music will embark on a programme of ‘Skills and Schools’ visits across the country in 2016 to reach out to the next wave of young music industry professionals.

Jo Dipple, UK Music Chief Executive said: UK Music is delighted to be hosting a ‘Skills and Schools’ event at Dagenham Park School. As an industry that contributes over £4.1billion to the UK economy and supports 117,000 jobs, the music sector needs to attract talented young adults into our ever-evolving industry. Through the workshops pupils will learn about the creative and commercial aspects of the business and the many different avenues for success it offers.”

Peter Rigby, Head of Music at Dagenham Park School said: “The resources and artists available to UK Music are really impressive. They have a strong focus on adding to the work already going on in school and helping to add to our curriculum. I look forward to working closely with UK Music in the future.”
