Brighton Rocks: UK Music heads to the Great Escape Festival

21/05/2018: UK Music headed down to Brighton for The Great Escape Festival on Friday to meet members and attend showcase and networking events.

Seven of the team went down to the seaside for the event on the Friday of the three-day festival – CEO Michael Dugher, Director of Communications Vincent Moss, Head of Policy Tom Kiehl, Head of Research Natalie Williams, Public Affairs Officer Felicity Oliver, Digital Communications and Events Officer Megan White and Business and Design Officer Beatriz Ribeiro.

We attended events hosted by many of our members, including the MU drinks reception, the MPA networking drinks, BASCA's How To Write Hits panel and Zebralution's drinks event at AIM House.

Tom went to the PRS and CMU Presents China Conference at Dukes in Komedia, where he met John Mottram (PRS for Music), Ali Condon (PRS for Music) and Ian Moss (BPI), and Vevo House where he met their very own Dot Levine.

Tom also attended the PPL, PRS for Music and PRS Foundation's '5 Years of the Momentum Music Fund' report launch, with a keynote from BASCA Chair Crispin Hunt and speeches from Vanessa Reed (CEO, PRS Foundation), Peter Leathem (CEO, PPL) and Paul Clements (Executive Director for Membership, International and Licening, PRS for Music).

Michael went for lunch with Gomez' Tom Gray and Ian Moss from the BPI, before the team attended the MPA drinks reception at The Coach House, where we met Ashling Pickett and Kirsty Booth (both MPA), Phil Nelson from BIMM, MU's Dave Webster and Jamie Pullman and Chris Hurne from DIT.

Megan and Michael stopped in at Cafe Plenty to watch breakthrough artist LUCA perform, where they spoke to Jeff Powell, director of Big Hug Management, before heading to the BASCA How to Write Hits panel at the Old Courtroom.

Tom, Vincent, Natalie, Felicity and Beatriz attended the PPL, PRS for Music and PRS Foundation's drinks reception in the MyHotel's Merkaba Bar, where they met Sarah Wall (PPL), Lynne McDowell (PPL), Amy Field (PRS for Music), David Bargery (PRS for Music), Annabella Coldrick (MMF), Dougal Perman (SMIA), Robert Kilpatrick (SMIA) and Nick Stewart (Sneaky Pete’s).

Megan, Michael, Vincent and Tom went to the MU's drinks reception at The Hope and Ruin, where they watched Pip Blom and met the band Peggy Sue.

Michael, Vincent and Tom also attended a dinner hosted by PPL and the MMF at Donatello's, where they spoke to BBC Music's James Stirling.

At the Killing Moon Showcase on the beach, Natalie bumped into Azi Efkatari and Rory Woodbridge from Youtube, Dan Smee from AmazonMusic and Will Hope from Spotify, before heading to BBC Introducing's showcase at the Old Ship's Paganini Ballroom, where she and Beatriz met Deezer's Jerome Coic and Marie Lallia.

Megan and Felicity dropped by The Haunt, which was packed, to watch Crewel Intentions, where they met Warren Ellis from Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.

The night was rounded off by watching Hunter and the Bear headline the Prince Albert, which was packed to the rafters.
