The University of Kent’s Centre for Music and Audio Technology (CMAT) houses three undergraduate degree programmes in Music. These cutting-edge courses were created to meet the needs of current students and the expectations of the music industry and to reflect the University’s research culture. CMAT offers excellent teaching by leading experts, as well as superb links to industry and state-of-the-art facilities.
CMAT is based at an inspirational waterfront environment in the Historic Dockyard Chatham, part of the University of Kent’s Medway campus. The Historic Dockyard Chatham is over 400 years old and its fascinating history is visible in the impressive buildings on site. Alongside our University buildings, the Dockyard is also home to several creative businesses and is often used as a location for film, TV and music videos.
Our industry-standard music facilities include ensemble rehearsal spaces, practice rooms and music studios installed with state-of-the-art technology. Our flagship studio features a new Neve Genesys Black G48 recording and mixing console and our Music and Audio Arts Sound Theatre is one of the best in the UK.
Students regularly perform music in a variety of specialist performance spaces on campus, as well as enjoying use of the fantastic performance spaces at the University of Kent’s Canterbury campus.
All members of CMAT staff bring with them a broad range of experience, from our expert academic staff to our highly qualified technicians and practising professionals. Together they will support, develop, challenge and inspire you throughout your studies.
We promote a creative and professional learning environment and encourage students to interact with each other, with members of staff and with practising professionals locally, nationally and internationally.
As a valued part of gaining industry knowledge and employability, our students enjoy a wide variety of guest lectures and workshops from leading experts across the music industry.
We also offer students a chance to take a year in industry on a professional work placement or to study for a year abroad.
Placements can be taken with a range of employers in the music industry as well as charities and arts organisations. We have partnerships with universities around the world, offering you the chance to rise to the challenge of living in another country and immersing yourself in a different culture.
Studying at CMAT will give you the knowledge, skills and confidence to launch your career in the music industry.
