13.08.2026: UK Music has congratulated all students picking up their A-level, T-level, RSL, UAL Diplomas and BTEC results.
Figures published today (Thursday August 13) by the Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) reveal the number of students taking music A-level in England, Wales and Northern Ireland fell from 5,418 in 2025 to 5,106 in 2026 – a decrease of 5.8%.
The long-term trend is concerning. Since 2014, there has been an overall fall of 39% in A-level Music entries, from 8,375 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland to 5,106 this year.
UK Music said: “While we welcome this Government’s commitment to restoring creative subjects in schools, and dropping the damaging EBacc, more work is needed on accountability measures such as Progress 8, investment in the workforce and updating the curriculum.
“We must keep investing in music education to give young people the opportunities they deserve, and to ensure the music industry has the talent and skills to continue contributing billions to our economy.”
