28.07.2026: The Official Albums Chart celebrates its 70th anniversary this year, and UK Music Chief Executive Tom Kiehl has hailed the staying power of the album format to mark the occasion.

Speaking to BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, Tom Kiehl discussed the enduring power of the album and its significant contribution to the success of the UK’s world leading music industry.

Tom said: “The music industry is worth £8 billion to the economy, generates £4.8 billion in export revenues, and employs 220,000 people. Those are big economic figures and that’s based on a really strong live sector but also recorded, publishing and merchandise sector.

“The album has been a really robust format that has stood the test of time despite some substantial challenges through digital disruption. It’s that curation, that link with the artist and the fan that people really want to invest in.”

Tom also named the Stone Roses’ self-titled debut album as his personal favourite record during the interview.
