Music Industry Offers Advice Following The Cancellation of SXSW 2020

09/03/2020: Following the cancellation of South by South West 2020 due to the coronavirus, the music industry has been offering advice to those hit by the decision to cancel the event in Austin, Texas.

Following the cancellation of South by South West 2020 due to the coronavirus, the music industry is offering advice to those hit by the decision to cancel the event in Austin, Texas.

City authorities took the decision on Friday March 6 to cancel the annual tech, film and music conference which was due to start on March 13. Organisers said it was the first time in 34 years the event would not be going ahead.

The news is a devastating blow to everyone affected by the decision including the 100+ British Artists performing and more than 60 acts that were due to appear at the British Music Embassy in Austin.

Organisers are now offering advice to those hit by the cancellation.

The MMF (Music Managers Forum) are gathering information relevant to managers and have published ‘Coronavirus - Key Points for Members’ info sheet here.

The Association of Independent Music (AIM) has created a Music Business FAQ document featuring health advice, travel, insurance and more.

The BPI said that members who had been affected by the cancellation, had any questions or need assistance should contact its membership team directly. Read their advice here.

“The global outbreak of coronavirus has created concern amongst our members, particularly those who are heavily involved in organising and participating at live music events.

“They are fearful of the impact this will have on music businesses. Cancelling SXSW is a huge blow for the many talented artists, managers and industry professionals who have been planning their trip to Austin, Texas for months to turn their dreams into reality.

“There is a need for continued regular communication between the Government and music industry, as well as consideration of financial support to ensure festivals, concerts and music businesses can get through potentially challenging months. We urge everyone to regular check the latest Government advice in this fast moving situation.”
