UK Music hosted ‘An Introduction To The Music Industry’ day at the University of Glasgow with a guest appearance from the Cabinet Secretary for Culture, Tourism and External Affairs Fiona Hyslop MSP on Thursday 2nd March. Jo Dipple, chief executive of UK Music and Professor Martin Cloonan of the University of Glasgow also gave introductions about the value of music education and jobs in Scotland.
Music industry legends Geoff Ellis, chief executive of T in the Park/ DF Concerts & Events, and producer/engineer and Chemikal Underground label owner Paul Savage both discussed their careers and experiences in the industry.
A panel discussion chaired by Eva Lamont of UK Music, took place with Dougal Perman, chair of the Scottish Music Industry Association, Doug Paine, founder of Mungo's Hi Fi record label, Jenn Nimmo-Smith from music PR company Electric Shores and Ivan Hall Barrientos, producer/DJ from duo illyus & Barrientos, who each shared their pearls of wisdom for working in the sector and highlighted the different aspects of the industry. Further workshops took place with Ivan hosting a music production masterclass, Carla Easton from TeenCanteen/Ette delivering a songwriting workshop and Leo O’Brien discussing the role of PPL.
