What is UK Music?

UK Music is a new umbrella organisation representing the collective interests of the UK’s commercial music industry, from artists, musicians, songwriters and composers, to major and independent record labels, managers, music publishers, studio producers and collecting societies.

Our members

UK Music's members include the Association of Independent Music (AIM), the British Academy of Composers & Songwriters (BAC&S), BPI (British Recorded Music Industry) Limited, the MCPS-PRS Alliance (The Alliance), the Music Managers Forum (MMF), the Music Publishers Association Limited (MPA), the Musicians Union (MU) and Phonographic Performance Limited (PPL).

Our core goals

Our core goals are to promote awareness and understanding of:

Policy and Government Relations

We engage in policy development on issues of relevance to our membership at UK, EU and international levels, particularly where measures are proposed that would have an impact on our members. We aim to ensure that their voice is heard and that policymakers continue to recognise the important cultural, social and economic contribution that the UK music industry makes the  UK and the world.

Creative Music Education

The creative industries play an increasingly vital role to the future success of the UK. Encouraging young people to be aware of the value of creativity and develop a respect for creators' rights is an important part of this new landscape. Equally important is equipping them with the right mix of business and enterprise skills to ensure a vibrant and healthy music sector in the UK in the future. We are at the heart of discussions on creative education and skills development, and are involved in a number of education and awareness initiatives.

Policy within the EU

Since most of the copyright legislation is harmonised at European level, e.g. through the Copyright Directive, it is particularly important that the interests of the UK Music industry are represented in Brussels

In Europe we work with several Departments of the Commission, in particular DG Internal Market, DG Education and Culture, and DG Information Society; we also regularly liaise with Members of the European Parliament to promote the UK music industry's view.
