Recommendations

UK Music has been working with the industry to ensure it better reflects the diverse community that it serves. We make the below recommendations to companies in order to create this diversity at all levels in the workplace:

• All companies should undertake equality and diversity training for all staff on an annual basis
• One person (if not more) should be tasked with equality and diversity delivery per company
• All companies should undertake unconscious-bias training (at all levels of the company). A great provider for this is Challenge Consultancy ltd – www.challcon.com
• All companies should endeavour to advertise widely, look for specialist recruiters and demand diverse shortlists for all job vacancies
• Recruiters Handle and Music Market have made a commitment to provide the industry with diverse shortlists for roles
• All companies should encourage and implement targeted mentoring schemes and ensure that both mentors and those being mentored are chosen from a diverse talent pool
• All companies should ensure that panels and speakers at events are not all male and all white
• All companies should promote parental leave, not just maternity leave, and offer enhanced paternity leave to prevent any financial disincentive for fathers to take it.
• Companies are encouraged to form development/youth boards which enable younger talents (who are in general more diverse than the talent on the main boards) to learn about board responsibilities, meet board members and feed into discussions at the top level
• Companies are encouraged to use apprenticeships as a way of reaching a more diverse potential workforce, but also to use them for women returning to work after career breaks
