Charities

The BRIT Trust is the charitable arm of the record industry. The Trust draws on substantial proceeds generated by the BRIT Awards – it has distributed more than £15m since 1989 to a range of good causes, including the BRIT School and Nordoff Robbins.

PRS for Music Foundation, the independent charitable foundation funded by PRS for Music, dedicated to funding new music across all genres. Since March 2000, the Foundation has supported 4,000 new music projects with over £13.5m – including initiatives such as British Music Abroad and Women Make Music.

Music Industry Trusts Award, the annual award and dinner supported across the industry, with proceeds of £3.7m benefitting Nordoff Robbins and the BRIT School since 1992.

Nordoff Robbins O2 Silver Clef Award, the annual award dinner celebrating excellence in the music business. Since 1976, the Silver Clef has raised more than £8m for Nordoff Robins

EMI Sound Foundation, the independent music education charity, established in 1997 to celebrate the centenary of EMI Records and improve young people’s access to music. The Foundation has helped over 2,000 schools, students and teachers, by providing grants of up to £2000 to purchase instruments and equipment. The Foundation also supplies 8 music colleges with £5000 bursaries for music students.

Teenage Cancer Trust, is a charity with strong links to the music industry (since 2000, Roger Daltrey has curated an annual week of fundraising concerts at the Royal Albert Hall). Alone, these have raised more than £14m for the charity.  Official industry partners of TCT include AMG, HMV, UMG, Sony Music and PRS for Music.

Next Brit Thing, the joint Department for Culture, Media & Sport/Department of Education initiative, organised by BPI and supported by PRS for Music, is a nationwide music competition for young people. Announced in July 2011, the competition received 2,500 entries. The three winners were announced in March 2012, with prizes including a recording session at Abbey Road Studio, the chance to perform at the Royal Albert Hall and a session at Strongroom Studios.

The Mayor Of London’s Fund For Young Musicians, is an independent charity to support and benefit young musicians across the capital, especially those from socially disadvantaged backgrounds, through access to sustained, progressive instrumental tuition and the experience of working with professional musicians.  The charity is supported by the Music Publishers Association

Rehearsal Spaces, supported by UK Music, DCMS and the MIA, a pilot scheme of 14 low-cost music rehearsal spaces for young people, all situated in areas of multiple deprivations, has been operational since 2011.

CALM [Campaign Against Living Miserably], the Association of Independent Music are an official partner of this independent UK charity, established in 2006 to reduce the high suicide rate of men under 35.

Music and the Deaf, is the the official charity of the Music Producers Guild. Music and the Deaf was founded in 1988, to help deaf people, and those who live and work with them, access and enjoy music.

Musicians’ Union, has a wide range of affiliations, from the UK People’s Disabled Council to Love Music Hate Racism

Musicians Benevolent Fund, an independent charity to provide help and support to older musicians – supported across the industry, for instance by the Music Publishers Association and the British Academy of Songwriters & Composers

War Child – formed in 1995 with the recording of the HELP album, War Child campaigns for children and families whose lives have been torn apart by war. It is still supported by regular live benefit concerts, for instance  this year’s pre-BRITS event featuring Damon Albarn & Graham Coxon.

OxJam, partnered by AMG, XFM, WeGotTickets, Live Nation and Festival Republic, Oxfam’s Oxjam is a month-long music festival encouraging volunteer music fans to host fundraising gigs in their local area. Since 2006, OxJam has raised more than £1.75m for Oxfam.

Cancer Research UK – the primary charity of Live Nation, who have raised almost £900,000 for the charity, with ambitions to reach £1m this year.

Music Festivals, most UK music festivals support a range of charities. For instance:

-          Glastonbury (Greenpeace, Oxfam, WaterAid plus local causes)

-          Bestival (Bestival Foundation)

-          T In The Park (Charity Village)

Additionally, the major festival promoters operate a charity donation policy for Guest List entrants. According to Festival Republic, the combined Guest List donations for Latitude, Reading/Leeds and Big Chill amount to £250,000 each year.
